August delegation to Guatemala

There are only a few spaces left for participants on our August delegation to Guatemala - and the application deadline has been extended to June 30! Apply today to participate in this ten-day immersion experience to understand the economic, social and political issues surrounding violence against women and femicide.
- Why do women in Guatemala suffer such high rates of domestic violence?
- What is femicide and why are women targets of these brutal murders?
- What factors contribute to Guatemala's 99% impunity rate for crimes of violence against women - and what does this impunity mean for women?
- How are women organizing around their rights and building a movement for a more equal and peaceful Guatemala?
- How can the international community support Guatemalan women?
From July 30-August 7, 2011, we will meet with women from all walks of Guatemalan society: Mayan and ladina, rural and urban, national activists and community organizers, survivors of violence, and those who support them. The delegation will look at the issues of femicide and violence, organizing and solidarity, and the 2011 elections. Participants will learn first-hand about the obstacles women confront in their daily lives, structural barriers to gender equality, and how the women's movement is organizing for women's rights. The delegation will also focus on what we as concerned individuals and activists can do to help. Join Us!
(If you aren't able to participate yourself, but would like to support GHRC's delegation, please consider contributing to our delegation scholarship fund. Your donation goes directly to offset the delegation fee of passionate and inspired delegates who are unable to pay the full cost of the trip.)
Since 2005, GHRC has led annual delegations to Guatemala focused on violence against women. The delegations serve as an integral component of GHRC's work to increase awareness in the U.S. about the issue, and strengthen grassroots solidarity efforts.

See our website for more details about the internship and how to apply. Apply by Friday, July 8!
