On the 2nd February 2011 our friend Víctor Leiva, known as “el Mono”, left the cultural center where he was taking dance classes. Moments later gunshots cut his life short.
Víctor was 24 years old when he was murdered. He was an artist and human rights defender, focusing particularly on the rights of young people, with whom he worked.
This deplorable act of violence was condemned by civil society and national and international human rights organizations.
A letter sent to Guatemala's Public Prosecutor on the 2nd August 2011, marking six months since his death and requesting the prompt investigation of his murder, was signed by 44 organizations and over 400 individuals from 26 countries.
Nevertheless, nearly a year after his murder, the circumstances surrounding his death have yet to be fully investigated.For this reason, institutional and individual signatures are currently being collected for the attached letter, which will be published in the Guatemalan media on the 2nd February 2012. It is hoped that even more signatures will be received than in the previous action, to show that the murder of young human rights defenders like Víctor cannot remain in a state of impunity.

El 2 de febrero de 2011 nuestro amigo Víctor Leiva, conocido como “el Mono”, salió de un centro cultural donde estaba recibiendo clases de baile. Momentos después un arma de fuego le cortó su vida.
Víctor tenía 24 años cuando fue asesinado. Era artista y defensor de los derechos humanos de los jóvenes, con quienes trabajó. Su asesinato generó una ola de repudio dentro de la sociedad civil y entre organizaciones nacionales e internacionales de derechos humanos. Una carta mandada a la Fiscal General de Guatemala el 2 de agosto de 2011, marcando seis meses de su muerte y pidiendo la pronta investigación de su asesinato, fue firmada por 44 organizaciones y más de 400 individuos de 26 países.
Sin embargo casi un año después de su asesinato las circunstancias siguen sin esclarecerse. En esta ocasión se está recopilando firmas institucionales e individuales para la carta en adjunto, que se publicará el 2 de febrero 2012 en los medios de comunicación guatemaltecos. Se espera recopilar aun más firmas para esta acción con el fin de demostrar que las muertes de jóvenes defensores/as de derechos humanos como Víctor no pueden quedarse impunes.
