Web Based Documentary Resource For School Age Children On Guatemalan Civil War

Screen shot 2016-01-19 at 12

When We Were Young / There Was A War continues the story of those same people today, who are now adults, many with children of their own. I’ve kept in touch with most of them over the years and filmed them again in 2012. It’s been a joy and privilege to see their accomplishments, coming from such harsh circumstances, while recognizing the profound poverty and struggles that many of them continue to face.

It’s not necessary to have seen “If the Mango Tree Could Speak” to use the website, as we’ve edited together both the archival and new footage of our characters into the videos presented here. For those interested, “If the Mango Tree Could Speak” can be purchased for classroom use from New Day Films.

We’ re adding characters to the site on a rolling basis. We post more content as we create it: text, photos, audio-visual material, videos and maybe some games. The website is intended to be a starting point for those wishing to learn about the civil wars and their aftermath in Guatemala and El Salvador, with the topics selected because they deepen the stories of our characters. I’ve worked hard to make the website historically accurate even as it naturally reflects both what I’ve seen firsthand and what I’ve learned from so many people as a lifelong student of the recent history and social movements in Central America.

This is a work-in-progress! If you’d like to be notified when we add more characters or have any suggestions for us please send a message via the “Contact Us” tab. Thanks for visiting When We Were Young / There Was A War.
