Tour of Guatemala attracts 80 cyclists

The 50th edition of the Tour of Guatemala cycling competition has attracted 80 cyclists and teams from five nations, organizers said on Wednesday, according to news reaching here.

The race has attracted teams from Costa Rica, Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia as well as locals, the National Cycling Federation said in a statement. It will cover 1,298 kilometers across 12 stages beginning on Oct. 20 and ending on Nov. 1.

Leading competitors are Jose Ismael Sarmiento, a Colombian who won 1998's race; Costa Ricans Pablo Vargas and Juan Carlos Rojas, who won 2004 and 2006 race respectively; and Venezuela's Manuel Medina, the defending champion.
