Election of new Magistrates are criticized by Guatemala's civil society

Guatemala. Guatemala City.- On October 14 the newly elected Magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice of Guatemala took office, the process of nomination and election started in May 2009. The process that started earlier this year has been scrutinized and supervised by civil society organizations and the CICIG, International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala. In spite of a new law that was passed by Congress to improve the transparency of the nomination and election process of the Magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice of Guatemala and the Appellant Courts, with strong pressure form national and international entities, the law had loopholes and the lawyers certainly found them.
