In its 2012 Annual Survey of Violations of Trade Union Rights released June 6, 2012, the International Trade Union Confederation found that Latin America remains the most dangerous region of the world for trade unionists, with Colombia again leading the world, followed by Guatemala.  

Luis Ovidio Ortiz Cajas, a trade union leader, was shot dead on 24 March in Guatemala City, together with three other men. He may have been targeted for his trade union activities. Other members of the trade union may be in grave danger.

Amnesty International is submitting this briefing to the Human Rights Committee ahead of its examination of Guatemala’s third periodic report on the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (the Covenant).
