On November 10, 2010, thanks to the support of the amazing team at ACOFOP (La Asociación de Comunidades Forestales de Petén - acofop.org) I was lucky enough to get a seat in a survey flight taking place with two researchers from CONAP (Consejo Nacional de Áreas Protegidas - conap.gob.gt), and piloted by a privately hired Captain from the Area, Armando Mas.

Members of a Salvadoran environmental organization travelling to meet with the Guatemalan government, to protest a new [Goldcorp Inc.] gold mine, were kidnapped and robbed by men wearing Guatemalan police uniforms. They are members of the Center of Investigations into Investment and Commerce (CEICOM) and were travelling with journalists from Salvadoran TV Channel 10.

He spends most of his days educating youth throughout Guatemala, now sponsoring the schooling of more than 70 kids. In his free time, he builds wheelchairs for people in the country. When his workday is done, he heads home, where he finds 12 to 15 kids waiting for dinner every single night.

The foundation of any democracy is an informed citizenry. In Guatemala, community radio is the best tool to provide rural, Indigenous Guatemalans with the news and information that they need. Despite promises made in the Guatemalan Constitution and the Peace Accords, the telecommunications law does not allow licenses for nonprofit community radio.

A heated discussion on Guantanamo took place this morning at the headquarters of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in Washington D.C. At the centre of the debate was Djamel Ameziane, an Algerian citizen detained in Guantanamo for the past eight years without being charged with a crime.
