I am passing this along from La Peña del Sol Latino. They are organizing a fundraiser for the families on the lake affected by the rains. The organization MAYAN FAMILIES will be the recipient of the aid.

Helping kids and their families discover the world around them is what we do.  Guatemala has one of the lowest literacy rates in the western hemisphere especially among girls and women.   Won't you please take a look at our blog to see all that we have accomplished in 2010, how many Guatemalan lives have been enriched by the work of Riecken Guatemala?
  • Latin Jazz Event in Antigua on August 20th
On Saturday, August 20th at 6pm we will be hosting a fundraiser event in Antigua at Convento de Capuchinas.  It will be a live, latin jazz evening and proceeds raised will support the Riecken Foundation, which is raising money to help build and support community libraries here in Guatemala.  (For more information please visit: http://www.riecken.org/) Tickets are Q250 per person, includes a glass of wine and hors d'oeuvres, and you can buy them through any of the American Society Board members.  Please call Greg at 5326-3849 or Tasha at 4891-8069 if you have any questions and of course if you want to buy tickets.  Sadly we won't have Tonya at the helm, pushing our ticket sales, but I do hope you will reach out and join us.

All across the U.S., the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) is celebrating 30 years of cross border solidarity in the struggle for justice in Guatemala. Founded in 1981, during the height of the U.S. funded counter-insurgency that resulted in genocide in Guatemala, NISGUA has changed and adapted over the years to be a long standing ally for human rights, economic justice, and dignity in a country still scarred from and rife with foreign economic and military intervention.
  • La 3ra. Noche de los Chefs, culinary event in Antigua Guatemala
The Third Annual Noche de los Chefs is Saturday, April 28th at 6:30pm in the beautiful ruins of Capuchinas in Antigua. For Q300, you will enjoy a welcome cocktail, a glass of wine, a 10-course dinner (each course specially prepared by a different restaurant from Antigua) and coffee, plus a raffle with great prizes from the participating hotels and restaurants.
  • Help Fund 500 copies of "Cual Guerra?"
I'm trying to raise money to buy 500 copies of my book, "Cual Guerra? Testimonios de Sobrevivientes Mayas", so I can distribute them for free to students in Guatemala. I'm posting my project on the Crowdrise fundraising platform to let as many people as possible know about the project and, of course, I'm hoping to raise the necessary funds.
