The village of San Miguel Escobar, near where I live, was hit hard with 70 families losing houses. The local parish decided to collect donations and take action themselves to rebuild houses. All labor is donated by the villagers themselves. They receive no money from government agencies or NGO’s. I was very impressed with the project and with Father Walter who has organized it all. I have received some money from friends that I have passed on to the people. I have met some of them and they are very appreciative. For those who donate I am sending out email updates of the progress. So far 15 houses have been built.

Early this morning I accidentally let one of our rescue dogs out of the clinic. He spooked and ran into a cafetal at the end of the street, where the farm dogs chased him. He is NOT a local dog-he came to us from Panajachel-doesn't know us well yet, and is completely LOST here with no base to navigate from.

I just wanted to send a friendly reminder about the solidarity delegation to to visit indigenous farming communities in Guatemala and accompany them in their struggle for land reform. The delegation will be happening from March 3-11, so we need to finish receiving applications ASAP so we can make final plans and people can get their plane tickets. (Airfare is currently actually cheaper than when I got my tickets, and currently looks like about $570 round trip, though you might find even cheaper if you are more clever than I).
